Darknodes served as the backbone of RenVM, which is now inactive (May, 2024). RenVM was a decentralized virtual machine designed to enable privacy-preserving, cross-blockchain transactions. In return for their services, Darknode operators receive compensation, incentivizing their continued participation and support.
